Pakistan made history on Sunday by launching its first-ever hyperspectral satellite, HS-1, from China’s Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre. According to SUPARCO, this marks a major milestone in strengthening the country’s space technology and capabilities.
Unlike regular satellite cameras that capture just a few broad color bands, hyperspectral sensors record hundreds of narrow spectral channels. This allows scientists to detect even the tiniest differences in vegetation, soil, and water composition, details that ordinary satellites simply can’t see. Experts say this makes hyperspectral technology especially useful for precision farming, environmental monitoring, and mapping natural resources.
According to SUPARCO, the HS-1 satellite will capture highly detailed spectral imagery to better monitor crop health, soil moisture, and water quality. It will also help track deforestation, pollution, and melting glaciers with greater accuracy. Additionally, the data from HS-1 will support early warning systems and post-disaster assessments for floods, landslides, and other emergencies, particularly benefiting Pakistan’s vulnerable northern regions.
Officials said the HS-1 satellite will also play a key role in supporting major infrastructure projects by identifying geological risks and helping plan safer, more resilient developments along routes like the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). SUPARCO Chairman Muhammad Yousaf Khan thanked the federal government for its support, noting that the satellite’s data will help increase agricultural productivity, strengthen climate resilience, and enhance the management of natural resources.
Project Director Mushtaque Hussain Soomro called the launch a significant step forward in Pakistan’s space roadmap, saying it positions the country to expand its space-based services for sustainable development and disaster preparedness.
The Foreign Office hailed the launch as a major milestone in Pakistan’s space program and praised the collaboration between Pakistani and Chinese technical teams. Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar also commended their dedication and the strong partnership between the two nations.
