Electric Bus Service May Soon Connect Four Key Cities in Punjab
Punjab plans an Electric Bus Service connecting Lahore, Kasur, Nankana Sahib, and Sheikhupura to cut traffic, pollution, and travel time.

Lahore: In a major step toward sustainable urban transport, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore, Dr. Athar Waheed, has proposed an electric bus service that will connect Lahore, Kasur, Nankana Sahib, and Sheikhupura. The initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion, cut emissions, and make travel more efficient across Punjab.
Addressing Lahore’s Traffic and Pollution Challenge
Dr. Waheed revealed that every day, 800,000 to 1 million vehicles and motorcycles enter Lahore, while 400,000 to 500,000 leave the city. This massive flow of traffic is a leading cause of smog, road accidents, and rising pollution levels in the provincial capital.
The new Electric Bus Service is designed to relieve this pressure by encouraging residents to shift from private vehicles to eco-friendly public transport.
Two-Phase Electric Bus Expansion Plan
The CTO’s proposal outlines a two-phase plan to modernize Punjab’s transportation system:
-
Phase 1: Launch of electric bus service routes connecting Lahore with Kasur, Nankana Sahib, and Sheikhupura.
-
Phase 2: Integration of the E-bus network with an intercity train system to enhance long-distance connectivity and convenience.
Dr. Waheed stated that the electric bus service will help reduce fuel expenses, travel time, and vehicular emissions, contributing to cleaner air and a healthier environment.
A Step Toward a Sustainable Future
The proposal has been formally submitted to the Commissioner of Lahore for review and approval. Once implemented, the Electric Bus Service will play a pivotal role in reducing Lahore’s carbon footprint, improving public mobility, and supporting Punjab’s green transport vision.
Officials believe the project could serve as a model for sustainable transportation across other regions of Pakistan, promoting cleaner cities and smarter urban planning.
