According to the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA), 7.16 million phones were built in Pakistan’s domestic factories between January and March 2022. In contrast, Pakistan imported 0.61 million smartphones in the first quarter of this year.

In contrast to Pakistan’s domestic production of 3.52 million phones, 0.15 million phones were imported during the month of March. Leading international brands like Nokia, Oppo, Samsung, Tecno, Vivo, Xiaomi, ZTE, and others are now produced in Pakistan.

The country’s effective adoption of the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) is the cause of the rising production figures. In order to fully utilise a cell phone, a consumer is obligated to pay a substantial tax on its import.

This is one of the reasons why more devices are being produced at nearby manufacturing facilities. Additionally, the government has loosened its manufacturing regulations, creating a supportive atmosphere for the production of mobile devices. Manufacturers have set up shop in Pakistan as a result.

Pakistan produced 24.66 million mobile phones in 2021 as opposed to just 13.05 million in 2020. The production increased dramatically over the two years by 88%. On the other hand, 10.26 million devices were imported into Pakistan in 2021 as opposed to 24.51 million in 2020.

According to PTA data, 2.83 million of the 7.16 million locally imported gadgets in Q1 of 2022 are 3G and 4G smartphones and 4.33 million are 2G cellphones.

However, individuals continued to import smartphones despite the growing local production of the devices. From July 2021 to March 2022, $1.596 billion worth of cellphones were imported. During the same time period, a growth of 3.93% was seen in compared to smartphones valued at $1.535 billion in 2020.

Notably, 30 businesses have so far obtained authorizations to assemble devices in Pakistan. As a result, the country now has a large number of employment prospects.
