Tesla Model 3 Is Likely To Be NYPD’s Fleet | $12.6 Million Purchase Proposal

The Tesla Model 3 is now being considered for inclusion in the fleet of police patrols of the New York City Police Department, or NYPD. The agency’s current plan is priced at a hefty $12.4 million.

On June 6, 2018 in New York City, Tesla automobiles are showcased in a showroom in Manhattan’s Meatpacking district. On Wednesday, Tesla stock rose more than 9.5 percent to its highest level since November 2015, after the firm announced it is approaching its Model 3 weekly production pace. Shareholders also endorsed Elon Musk as chairman and CEO in a vote.

The New York Police Department’s Fleet Is Likely To Be Tesla Model 3.

According to a Bloomberg article, the NYPD’s latest approach will allow the EV tech giant’s sedan to be part of the country’s greatest police force.

Nearly 36,000 officers work for the vast police force. In addition, the fleet has a total of roughly 9,000 police cars.

The announcement comes as the country’s largest police force seeks to convert to an all-electric fleet, according to a procurement document obtained by Bloomberg.

Aside from helping the government meet its climate goals, electric cars have lower maintenance expenses than gas-powered vehicles.

That stated, the police department is projected to save money in the long run not only on fuel prices, but also on maintenance costs.

Proposal to Buy a Tesla Model 3

It’s worth mentioning that the Tesla Model 3 sedans have not yet been purchased.

In actuality, the police department will still have to go through the approval procedure, which will be considered at a hearing on Thursday morning, Dec. 16.

The price of a Tesla Model 3 is anticipated to be $51,940 per unit, according to the draft procurement document. It’s worth noting that the proposal calls for the purchase of 250 automobiles.

If the NYPD follows through on its plan to switch its fleet to Tesla, it will be replacing Ford police cars, which long dominated the patrols of the country’s largest police force.

The Tesla Model 3 Police Car may allow the United Kingdom to save money while also putting its emergency vehicle market to the test.

According to an Electrek post from July, the NYPD’s Highway Patrol converted a Tesla Model 3 into a patrol vehicle. During that period, however, the police department has failed to order a large number of EVs.

Tesla EVs and the cops

It’s not the first time a police agency has included Tesla electric vehicles in their fleet. For example, a company in Fremont, California, has already purchased both a Model Y and a Model S to add to its fleet of electric vehicles.

The performance of the Model S sedan “matched or exceeded expectations,” according to the pilot program’s findings. In most cases, the EV surpassed the gas patrols, according to the police agency.

Not to add that Fremont claims to have saved $4,000 in annual fuel costs. Furthermore, its low maintenance requirement saves the agency $2,000 in repair costs.
